The repair shop found that replacing the iPhone 13 screen would destroy Face ID-unless the microcontroller was moved to the new screen.

According to reports, Apple will soon send an update to keep the iPhone functioning properly.

Apple’s iPhone 13 came out in September, and it didn’t take long for independent repair shops to discover a major problem that prevented them from replacing the phone screen. According to reports, iPhone manufacturers will update their phones in the future to solve this problem.

The technical repair website iFixit reported an issue on November 4th that caused the iPhone 13 to fail to use Face ID after changing the phone screen. According to a report from The Verge on Tuesday, it is reported that Apple will soon release an update to keep the iPhone functioning properly after changing the screen.

The source of the problem is the microcontroller paired with the iPhone 13 screen. When the screen is switched, the small chip cannot recognize the new screen and prevents Face ID from working. The only solution is to remove the microcontroller from the old screen and solder it to the new screen, which requires the use of a microscope due to its size.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

For years, independent repair shops have been competing with Apple and other technology companies for the accessibility of repaired products. This issue is called repair rights. President Joe Biden issued an executive order in July to help farmers repair their own equipment, but third parties continue to push for the repeal of state legislation that prevents them from repairing equipment.
