From the Newsroom with Secom/PBThe best doctor is the one who receives those who have been given up by everyone else. This is a statement by the philosopher Aristotle that became real in the life of the patient Inácia Alves da Silva, 52 years old, resident of the city of Boqueirão, in the countryside of Paraíba, who arrived at the Dom José Maria Pires Metropolitan Hospital, a unit managed by the PB Saúde Foundation. , disillusioned, after receiving the same medical diagnosis for 6 years, that the Petroclival Meningioma identified in her exams was inoperable. At the first consultation, on April 6 of this year, the patient arrived at the unit very weak, regulated by the State Department of Health.According to neurosurgeons Daniel Ronconi and Breno Câmara, before arriving at the Metropolitano, she heard from other specialists that the removal of the tumor would not be indicated and was instructed to return home and live the rest of the time she had left.About 6 years passed, and the tumor that was already large, when she received the first diagnosis, was even bigger, and had already compromised her motor functions and part of her senses.“Inácia arrived with one side of her body paralyzed, she couldn't walk, she didn't eat on her own, her speech was very weak and she had lost one side of her hearing”, reported neurosurgeon Daniel Ronconi. After analyzing the case, the specialists explained to the patient that, for a long time, the radical removal of Petroclival Meningiomas was considered high risk and associated with high mortality. However, recent advances in skull base approaches and microsurgical techniques, which both neurosurgeons already mastered, would allow the possibility of safe radical removal.Focusing on the patient's quality of life, the neurosurgeons explained that the procedure lasted more than 22 hours, and was divided into two stages, carried out on different days to prevent physical and psychological fatigue from impairing the performance of the surgery. The first stage took place on April 18, and aimed to create access, while the second stage was carried out on April 25, for the removal of the tumor.“As her lesion was very large, multicompartmental and deep, the technique we used was an extensive craniotomy called Combined Petrosectomy. It is a complex and time-consuming access that involves a lot of bone work, precisely to avoid touching the brain and preserving it.In addition, we combined this technique with another, called Peeling Tentorial, which brought an excellent result”, explained Breno Câmara. In addition to the professionals who worked in the operating room: anesthesiologists, instrument technicians, technicians and nurses, there was the essential participation of the multidisciplinary team to achieve a surprising result.“For a patient like this, it is essential to have, both pre- and post-operatively, an intense follow-up of physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition and nursing care. So, without a doubt, this result is the result of teamwork”, said the doctor. After being discharged on May 25, Inácia returned to the Metropolitano on June 27.At the meeting with the specialists, quite moved, she also thanked them.“I'm just proud to talk about the care of this hospital, about these wonderful doctors that God used to perform this surgery. For me to be talking today, walking and eating with my own mouth is a very good feeling, with a lot of joy and emotion, so everything I say to say thank you is still not enough.I only ask that God give more health and wisdom to everyone who has helped in some way to restore my life,” she thanked.Satisfied with the result, Maria José da Silva, the patient's sister, who accompanied her throughout the course of the disease, expressed her gratitude to the entire team involved.“The feeling that remains now is one of great joy, new life and gratitude.I am very grateful to the surgeons and the entire team that took care of her and the complete management of the hospital, as the reception my sister received was very good, the care was the best”, she described. On the occasion, Daniel Ronconi emphasized that the time away from his family studying and all the abdications he had to go through were rewarded when he saw the difference he made in the life of Dona Inácia.“There would be no money in the world to pay for what we feel when we see the patient in this way.We realized that everything we did was worth it.If she was the only patient we managed to save, it would have been worth the rest of her life. That's really what health and being a doctor is about, trying to make a difference in people's lives,” he said. The superintendent of the PB Health Foundation that manages the Metropolitan Hospital, Daniel Beltrammi, stressed that surgeries like these are also possible thanks to the complete and modern infrastructure that the hospital has.“Complex procedures like this can be performed successfully, as we have a high-level microscope, an ultrasonic aspirator, an endoscope and all the standard material that the major centers of the world use to obtain efficiency and good results in this type of surgery. Our mission here at Metropolitano is to continue providing the best service in the SUS to Paraíba residents”, concluded Daniel. This website uses cookies to improve your browsing experience.By clicking
