Have you ever thought about the difficulty faced by health students in times of a pandemic? In order to provide a differentiated understanding of living beings, in order to reveal the various microscopic structures, the University Center of Brasília (CEUB) transformed limitations and challenges imposed by social isolation into overcoming. At the height of the Covid-19 cases, the managers, teachers and technicians of the institution's Science Laboratory (Labocien) implemented an innovative solution with a system available on the internet - the "Virtual Microscopy" -, capable of supplying and providing online quality in the teaching and learning in cytology, histology, pathology and diagnosis in laboratory analysis. To implement the solution, the team of experts – made up of the Pedagogical Center, the Laboratory Management, with the cooperation of the Technology and Information sector, the professors and the support of the higher management of the University Center – carried out a task force to investigate technological solutions. that could meet the demands of the courses. This area commonly conducts on-site practical classes that, in the period in question, were restricted to theoretical classes with technological mediation. In order to offer low-cost tools with great benefit and educational quality, Labocien's faculty and technicians made it possible to implement technological instruments related to the health area, already consolidated in the diagnostic medicine job market, now for the academic environment, such as in the case of virtual microscopy.“Based on this idea, we planned and implemented this practice applied to the educational domain, using an application available on the internet and digitizing the institution’s collection, with pieces from more than 30 years”, says Professor Magda Verçosa, Coordinator of Labocien .The initiative had a contribution of R$ 30 thousand, an investment that generated a drastic reduction in the cost of maintenance of microscopes, which is around R$ 40 thousand per semester, in addition to the acquisition of new equipment and slides, since the collection digital is now lifelong for use by the entire CEUB community for teaching, research and extension. In all, 300 cytohistopathological slides have been digitized so far, with a projection of 600 by the end of 2022.Given the premises of integrating different courses and understanding the interdisciplinary competence of a University Science Laboratory, the digital collection of microscopy can be continuously expanded and updated.Specialist Rafael Jesus from the Labocien Pedagogical Center explains that “the tool has a magnification capacity and image quality that is much superior to the analysis performed by a conventional optical microscope, with a digital zoom of 1000x”.In this way, it is possible for the user to identify areas of relevance in an entire slide, through offline or online access.Since its implementation, the "virtual laboratory" has served all CEUB health courses: Biomedicine, Biological Sciences, Physical Education, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Nutrition, which have, in their Pedagogical Project, disciplines or modules of biological bases such as cytology, histology and pathology.“The use of cyto-histo-pathological slides is a fundamental part of the basic training of health professionals. However, the management of this micro collection is complex, since it presents loss of slides, many of them unique, when they are broken in the process of learning how to use optical microscopes. In this sense, we observed administrative and technical gains, validated by the various users, teachers and students involved with this practice”, explains Professor Antônio Marcos, manager of Labocien. After the period of resumption of face-to-face activities, the technology adopted by CEUB expanded the possibilities of learning. With physical and virtual microscope options, the academic community enjoys resources for simultaneous studies with several slides, which provide the use of advanced techniques for systematization of diagnostic reading.Professor Renata Uchôa, professor of the Medicine course, emphasizes that “students do not even need to be in the same environment for the study, the same slide can be seen by several students in different places. And they can design study guides by taking measurements and notes in specific areas and on a microscopic scale.”Magda considers the microscopy project as part of a laboratory that has an integrated management and talks about technological issues and trends, in order to expand learning and train complete professionals.“We also reflected on the possibility that this instrument could be used in Realistic Simulation practices, thus cooperating with the acquisition of professional skills. One of the great challenges of theoretical-practical classes is the integration of learning with the world of work”, she concludes.Save my name, email and website in this browser for the next time I comment. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.Learn how your feedback data is processed.Enter your email to receive our free newsletter.Read our privacy policyPublished Editora Ltd.Rua Felipe Gadelha, 104 Sala 55 – Santana CEP: 02012-120 – São Paulo/SP Phone: (11) 3966-2000
