Protist Lab Films is a company run by Fabian Weston, a former lab technician and sound engineer.Having worked for 25 years as a sound engineer and music producer alongside some of Australia's foremost musicians and colleagues, including at the famous Albert Studios, Weston decided to rekindle his passion for microscopy and the fascinating creatures it allows to reveal. It was thus that a few years ago Weston created Protist Lab Films equipped only with a microscope and his phone camera.During his career in the music and entertainment industry, he became familiar with Blackmagic Design products. When a friend in the community recommended the brand, Weston began to consider the vast range of options it offered and soon realized that the Melbourne-based company's products could be a great ally for his microscope projects. The goal of Protist Lab Films is to raise awareness about the protist kingdom, made up of unicellular eukaryotic organisms that are not animals, plants, fungi, viruses or bacteria. In general, these are known as algae or protozoa.“I got used to using Blackmagic Design products a few years ago when I was working as an audio mixer at a jazz club in Sydney called The Basement. From the production studio upstairs, we streamed performances live to YouTube using Blackmagic cameras and mixers, as well as having a MADI connection for separate audio blending,” explained Weston.Since early 2022, Weston has been using the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K model to film the amazing world of these tiny creatures. Thanks to the camera's compatibility with a variety of high-quality microscope lenses and its versatile design, he was able to connect his microscope directly to the unit.Once the images are captured in Blackmagic RAW format, the recorded material is edited and graded in DaVinci Resolve. As a final touch, taking advantage of his musical talents, Weston creates a soundtrack for some of the sequences before uploading them to the Protist Lab Films YouTube channel.“It's a seamless and comprehensive process, and it's amazing working individually. Also, Blackmagic Design's technical support is fantastic. The company has significantly simplified the entire workflow,” said Weston. The material recorded by Weston has already caused a sensation. In 2021, he won Nikon's "Small World in Motion" competition by documenting protist organisms that live in the gut of Australian termites.“There are very few people willing to create a soundtrack from scratch to accompany images of microscopic organisms, and as a result, what I have achieved so far is something unique and interesting.I'm a huge fan of Blackmagic Design's approach and philosophy, and I'm sure that people like me will continue to use their products to complete wonderful projects in the future,” Weston concluded.
