Olympus Corp said Monday it will sell its microscope unit to U.S. investment fund Bain Capital for 427.67 billion yen ($3.1 billion),

Mitt Romney and private equity capital spreading the love worldwide.

Michael Woodford’s book about the Olympus scandal is well worth a read. He only avoided the same fate as Ghosn by contacting the Financial Times, and getting his story out there before the Japanese authorities could arrest him on spurious charges.

In a way it feels like Olympus lost its essence. The fluorescence microscopes they produce were exceptional and terribly easy to use, but the same as their camera business their microscopes have been losing ground to other companies very quickly, it was inevitable that they would sell this division as well.

Is that 35mm? If so, Fujifilm still manufactures 35mm film. A bit pricey compared to the old days. But, still easy to find in both Japan and the US. (And, I assume, other major markets.)

I had one, as a kid, as well.
