ONAWAY– At its June meeting, the PIE&G Communities First Fund Board of Directors finalized review of submitted applications and made awards totaling $6,468. At their meeting in September, the board approved grants in the amount of $6,180 to local charitable organizations as well.

The following is a list of grants awarded to local recipients.

Thunder Bay River Center Inc. ($2,500)

The grant will be used for construction of a pavilion and restrooms at Duck Park in Alpena. The Thunder Bay River Center plans to construct a barrier-free, ADA-compliant pavilion and two unisex restrooms. The pavilion will be the site of outdoor programs designed to encourage people in five counties across PIE&G’s service area to explore the natural resources and recreational opportunities available in the Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary.

Atlanta Church of Christ-The Caring Place ($2,000)

The grant will help to purchase food, clothing, and other household items to assist struggling families. The Caring Place has provided food assistance for over 25 years in Montmorency County. A team of volunteers helps to distribute food, free of charge, to needy families once a month.

The HCS will use their grant towards costs of reconditioning used instruments to help provide an opportunity for participation in band to all students, regardless of their economic ability (or inability) to purchase or rent a musical instrument of their own.

Hubbard Lake Lions Community Foundation ($1,680)

Funds will cover part of the costs to purchase soft fall (a certified mulch) for the Hubbard Lake Lions Park. The soft fall mulch is designed to absorb the impact from falls and will enhance the safety of the playground area for visitors.

The OAHM will purchase several items including Past Perfect Museum software to catalog its collections, a computer to document and manage the collection, and archival quality storage for items in their collections. The museum’s primary focus is on the care, preservation, and interpretation of artifacts in its collection. Its goal is to foster a sense of pride and belonging in the community through education of local citizens and all visitors.

Posen will purchase upgraded microscopes for enhanced student training in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The grant will be used to purchase ten binocular compound light microscopes – each with a high-powered oil immersion lens. The microscopes will help prepare students for college-level science courses and allow them to better understand the functions of the human body, including visual observation of cells and microscopic organisms.
