They examine more than 200 animals from the zoo in Monclova

RODRÍGUEZ / THE COAHUILA CENTURY)The 210 animals of the 35 different species housed in the Monclova Municipal Zoo underwent clinical tests to detect possible parasites in their digestive systems.The Zoo, located within the Monclova Ecopark, is the only one in the State and has local and exotic fauna such as bears, deer, bighorn sheep, wild boar, pumas, ostriches, lions, tigers, elans, red deer, buffalo, bison, llamas and crocodiles, among others.(Photo: SERGIO A. RODRÍGUEZ / THE COAHUILA CENTURY)The director of the area, Rafael González Ortiz, explained that 30 veterinary students and their teachers, as well as animal health specialists from the park, carried out the exams.In turn, David Puente Medina, chief veterinarian of the complex, indicated that the students entered the habitats of the zoo and took fecal samples from the beasts to perform copro analysis.Two types of examinations were carried out on the biological material to look for parasites, larvae or their eggs.(Photo: SERGIO A. RODRÍGUEZ / THE COAHUILA CENTURY)With reagents applied to the eses and through a microscope, the samples were reviewed as the first filter, and then the solids of each sample were separated with a centrifuge, to locate possible stomach or intestinal hosts hidden in the first test.Preliminary results did not detect parasites."If we find a sick animal, we will treat it with the appropriate medication, corresponding to the species that is positive in the tests," said Puente Medina.THERE IS NO REST IN THE ZOOThe director of the zoo, on the other hand, pointed out that in the animal park there is no rest any day of the week or on holidays, since the 35 species housed there must be attended to.He explained that the copro tests carried out by the veterinary students were carried out on September 16, a festive date, the day on which the Monclova Ecopark and the Municipal Zoo kept their doors open.(Photo: SERGIO A.
